dobby

This is a series of woven samples created on a CompuDobby loom for the Designing Traditions exploration done in conjunction with the RISD Museum.  These particular samples were made in response to a 16th century Chinese straw raincoat.  I was enamored by the structural integrity of the coat and its ability to protect and defend its wearer from the elements.  I used materials similar to those used to make the coat, paper yarns and different types of cellulosic fibers; and also employed different types of monofilament pockets for a more contemporary protective barrier.  A selection of these samples was displayed in the RISD Museum's Donghia Costume and Textile Gallery.
